The Starlings of Studland
At the beginning of January 2017 I was lucky enough to witness the fantastic sight, a murmuration of starlings. I was waiting setting up to capture a sunset over at Studland in Dorset when out of nowhere thousands of birds flew over my head and started to 'dance' in the sky.
Over the next 30 minutes the initial group was joined by more groups ending up with several thousands of these birds flying together in the sky. Unfortunately that evening was dull but this didnt detract to much from the awesome display these starlings put on.
I compiled my video clips to create a video of the even found which is included below.
Starlings in Dorset
The display's were fun to watch but after getting home and looking at my shots I realised a lot of the shapes they were creating looked like other birds be it bigger starlings a duck or even a parrot... (at a stretch)
Murmuration of Starlings
The murmuration is said to be where the birds fly together to exchange information such as feeding areas whilst also providing themselves safety in numbers. This usually happens around dusk.
I captured this video on the 8th of January 2017 at Studland near Sandbanks in Poole. I believe this was one of the first sightings of these birds and they are still there now over 2 weeks later.
I was lucky enough to have both ITV and Bournemouth Echo wanting to use my video on their websites to cover the story.
Where to find this
If you would like to see this for yourself it is still happening (as far as i'm aware) whilst I write this post. This display is usually happening just past the Studland Chain Ferry near Bramble Bush Bay. You will need to be there around 30 minutes before sunset.
The closest postcode is BH19 3BA
